Damily®, LLC a black owned winery started after many years of dabbling with the fermentation of natural products that contain sugars which are subsequently converted to alcoholic beverages. We have always been fascinated with the history and ancient methods of wine making with honey and grapes. The decades old art of wine making and dozens of winery tours while enjoying a glass or two or three always seemed to ignite our passion. The question “why can’t we make our own wine?” came up after touring a winery in San Francisco. Without hesitation or persuasion, we started by making mead from raw unfiltered honey of different flower nectars. Our curiosity with mead is because most mead do not require the addition of sulfites which are preservatives that maintain the flavor and freshness of wine. We received positive and not so positive feedback from family and friends; the positive feedback was from our “sweet tooth” family and friends while the “die-hard, grape wine fanatics” were not as enthused with mead.
